This piano is aged between 1940-50. It has normal wear and tear. It was my mothers as a teenager. It will need to be tuned up and restored, but it is all original and in great shape. The cover for the bench seat needs to be reupholstered but it has its original stuffing. One of the pedals needs repairing. We are sad to see it go but we just do not have the room for it. It would make a great beginner piano and with the great quality craftsmanship it will last for many more years. Chickering and Sons(not to be confused with Chickering Brothers) was the first actual piano factory in America. Established in Boston in 1823 by Jonas Chickering with partner James Stewart.

The firm was known as'Stewart& Chickering' for a short time) From about. 1830-1840, Chickering built some pianos under the name of Chickering& Mackay. John Mackay was a sea captain, and he would export Chickering pianos to South American, and in return, would bring back ships full of sweet smelling rosewood and mahogany for piano building.

Mackay was lost at sea in 1841, and we have seen only a handful of pianos bearing the name Chickering& Mackay. Apparently they are very rare today. In 1852, the name of the firm was changed to Chickering& Sons when Chickering brought in his three sons, Thomas, Frank and George, as partners.

Jonas Chickering died in 1853, and the firm was taken over by his son Thomas. Thomas Chickering died in 1871, and the firm was taken over by Frank Chickering. The remaining brothers died in the 1890s, as the firm continued to grow and thrive. In 1908, Chickering was sold to the American Piano Company, makers of some of America's better brand names. In 1932, the Aeolian Piano Company and the American Piano Company merged to create the Aeolian-American Corporation, and they continued to build the Chickering name for decades. 1903 Six foot four inch Chickering Art Case Parlor Grand Piano Thank you for considering our piano! It is of quality that a serious musician will appreciate and enjoy; while at the same time.

It will add a beautiful Victorian flair to any room. This piano was manufactured in 1903 when Chickering was famous for building one of the finest pianos. Its construction is more substantial than pianos common today from Asia and Eastern Europe. It holds its tuning pitch unbelievably well and has always been kept in tune since its re-build. It comes with an Artist Adjustable bench with black leather seat and round legs. It was rebuilt in 1976 when it received new: strings, pin-block, tuning pins, hammers, damper felts, and had the sound board repaired and re-crowned.

The action is very comfortable, responsive, and with a great dynamic range. And I want to downsize. We might consider negotiating a trade for a high quality upright piano of 44” to 50” tall. Needs cleaning tuning. Bottom petals removed to move it. Gorgeous piece I played it before we moved it sound is awesome.

A distant relative of the famous Chickering& Sons of Boston. Chickering Brothers built exceptional instruments with models like the Acoustigrande and the Capacoustic Grand.

These instruments were scientifically designed to get the maximum tone and volume for size, often being quite small in outward dimensions. If you aren't familiar with Chickering, you are in for a real treat! Chickering is not only one of the oldest American piano companies, it also provided inspiration for Henry Steinway to start Steinway & Sons pianos! At one time Chickering was the largest piano company in the United States.

In fact there have been several Chickering pianos in the White House. So what makes Chickering pianos so special Chickering was one of the great innovators in the development of the piano and was one of the few American piano companies that survived after WWII.

In fact Chickering was still producing pianos in the United States in the 1980's.Many people are seduced by the lush sound of Chickering pianos. There are many design elements that contribute to this including the wide tail which allows for a larger soundboard area than in other pianos. It is also the manufacturing excellence particularly in the Chickering pianos from this period of intense competition in the American piano market when the piano reigned supreme and hundreds of companies were vying for recognition. This instrument has been lovingly restored to a high level of performance and aesthetic beauty. The soundboard is in phenomenal shape. The fact that the original, real key tops (not plastic) are intact, speaks volumes about the gentle life this piano has enjoyed. This is a great piano for a serious player or any space that requires a concert level instrument of the highest order.
